It was nearly impossible to walk the beach at Cates Park in North Vancouver this afternoon without fear of stepping on something.
I shot over a dozen varieties of wee crabs in various colours and patterns, ranging in size from my pinky fingernail to my thumbnail.
What a blast!
As we were rambling around in North Vancouver today, Yumi heard the sound of young birds begging. She soon spotted this lovey sapsucker coming in with food delivery.
I got a few shots but we din’t stare too long, not wanting to disturb the family.
One of my “nieces” (cousin’s daughter) is starting a project documenting all the plastics used in her life. That got me thinking about our trip to Japan last year when one day we went to the Sea of Japan coast in Aomori Prefecture.
The views were spectacular, but once you got up close, there were piles of plastic garbage strewn all over the beach. Much of the crap was not Japanese, but had floated in from other countries across the sea.
It occurred to me that I’d never posted these photos to my blog, so here they are. Shot in April 2019.

I spent about four hours rambling Iona Beach Regional Park near YVR today, part of the superb Metro Vancouver Regional Parks system.
First, welcome to the ‘hood. . . Not! Red-Winged Blackbird greeting committee. . .
Next up, lots of tree swallows.
Perhaps not the best spot to attempt a landing, damselfly!

A stroll around Como Lake in Coquitlam produced goslings, ducklings, a red-winged blackbird, and an invasive red-eared slider.

Spotted this Bald Eagle topping a mast on a sailing boat at the Stewart Heritage Farm in Surrey, BC. It was drying off after the rain stopped.
Had a slow walk around the lower portion of Byrne Creek in Burnaby, and along Fraser Foreshore Park. Had fun chasing a couple of goldfinches around, enjoyed watching a grooming Great Blue Heron, and also found assorted butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies and bugs.
Spent a few hours wandering Spanish Banks in Vancouver. Lots of action near the creek outfall.
Crow aerobatics
The outfall of Spanish Banks Creek into the bay was a popular bathing spot for crows.
Gulls were picking up shellfish and dropping them to crack them open.
What a gorgeous day to wander the beach at Spanish Banks in Vancouver for a few hours today!
