Great Blue Herons Fishing Fraser Foreshore Ponds
There were a couple of Great Blue Herons fishing the ponds at Fraser Foreshore Park in SE Burnaby, BC, today.
I find it amazing how they catch a fish or other prey, and then rotate it so the snack is parallel to the throat for easy ingestion. No hands!
UPDATE: Apparently that’s a Northwestern Salamander going down the hatch. . .

Hummingbirds, Robins, Towhees in Burnaby, BC
I had great fun photographing this Anna’s Hummingbird near Taylor Park in SE Burnaby, BC. I started shooting from a distance, and slowly moved in closer.
At one point I was standing underneath it, but was shooting into backlight, so I wondered if it would hang around while I climed a six-foot embankment to get a better angle.
I was gratified that it waited for me :-).
I liked the diagonal effect of this robin and the blossoms

Cute Raccoon in Byrne Creek Ravine Park
A few minutes after I started out on my Byrne Creek ravine walk in SE Burnaby, BC, this morning, I heard several crows doing an intruder alert.
I followed the noise, suspecting they were harrassing an owl or a hawk, but I had trouble spotting anything.
As I wriggled my way closer through the bush, I finally noticed a lump on the tree the crows were focused on, and eventually it became evident the lump had a ringed tail, and then this face came into focus .
