Eagles, Killdeer and More at Centennial Beach in Delta
In addition to the Northern Harrier I chased (see previous post), I also saw other birds at Centennial Beach in Delta, BC.
There were lots of Bald Eagles. At one point over a dozen were soaring high together.
I heard these Killdeer before I spotted them.
Golden-crowned Sparrow
Spotted Towhee
Northern Harrier at Centennial Beach in Delta
I followed and watched this Northern Harrier for about an hour at Centennial Beach in Delta, BC, this morning. I’ve got a sore neck and back, but got a few decent photos out of the near 200 that I shot of this raptor!
First 2024 Spotting of Salmon Fry in Byrne Creek
Yumi spotted a few dozen fry near the footbridge in Byrne Creek Ravine Park in SE Burnaby, BC, on our late afternoon walk today.
It was getting dark, so we couldn’t ID them, but I did get this video:
We’ll be watching more carefully now, and will try to get an ID soon.
South Burnaby Morning Ramble
Taking advantage of a late shift today to do a south Burnaby ramble in the morning.
Hawk, Eagles, Waterfowl at Fraser Foreshore Park in Burnaby, BC
In addition to the several Great Blue Herons that I photographed at Fraser Foreshore Park in Burnaby, BC, this morning (see previous post), here are a few other species.
Hawk at extreme range. I still have trouble distinguishing between Cooper’s and Sharp-shinned, but it was quite small.
Male and female Ring-necked ducks.
Bufflehead diving in lower Byrne Creek near the confluence with the Fraser.
Bald Eagles on a log boom. The one on the right was eating something that looked like a small mammal.
Great Blue Herons at Fraser Foreshore Park in Burnaby, BC
I photographed several Great Blue Herons at Fraser Foreshore Park in Burnaby, BC, this morning. Several of them were snoozing.
White Rock Walk
It’s been overcast and raining day after day in the BC lower mainland. Par for the course, but hoping to get some sun we headed down to White Rock.
No luck with sunshine, but we did get to see some birds off the pier.
Common Loon
Surf Scoter with shellfish
And an Amtrak train.
BCIT Journalism Student Interview about Urban Creeks
BCIT journalism student Chris met me on Byrne Creek in SE #Burnaby, BC, to shoot some vid and interview me about urban creeks.
We talked about water quality and water quantity issues in urban areas, infiltration and rain gardens, and what folks can do to help protect their local oases of nature.
As the rain came down Chris assured me that I could go home while he got some extra shots of the roaring creek :-).
Good job, Chris!
North 40 Reserve Park, Historic Stewart Farm Walkabout
We headed out to the North 40 Reserve Park in Delta, BC, and the Historic Stewart Farm in Surrey, BC.
It was quiet at both sites, but got a few wildlife/nature shots.
I didn’t feel like carrying Big Bertha, my 150-600mm Tamron, so all of these were shot with an 18-400mm Tamron using an FTZ adapter on a Nikon Z50.
And thank you to Yumi, my amazing spotter. Always good to have a second set of eyes along that also love nature and wildlife!
