Morning at Piper Spit at Burnaby Lake in Burnaby, BC, and sandwich lunch and lake loop at Deer Lake.

Northern Pintails are among my fave waterfowl – they look so sleek and elegant

There were lots of Double-crested Cormorants at Deer Lake

Temperature records were set all over BC today, and the invasive Red-eared Sliders were basking at Deer Lake

This Great Blue Heron was perched high in a tree at Deer Lake

And another stroll at Fraser Foreshore Park in Burnaby, BC.

I took a stroll this morning around Terminus Park, part of the Fraser Foreshore in Burnaby, BC.
You cannot access it these days from the west due to construction, but you can access it from near the waste-to-energy incinerator.
It was fairly quiet, saw only two other people out walking their dogs.
The highlight was a Great Blue Heron monitoring the off-channel habitat ponds.

Thank you to those of you who have RSVP’d for our open house next Tuesday, Feb 10, 2026. We look forward to sharing information about the Byrne Creek Streamkeepers, answering your questions and giving you a chance to meet the amazing people who have been caring for the Byrne Creek watershed for over 30 years.
If you’re planning to come but haven’t let us know yet, please do so we can have enough goodies and help reduce the number of cars.
Hope to see you there!
Come join the Byrne Creek Streamkeepers!
Perhaps you would like to count returning salmon, or monitor the bugs they eat. Or maybe you are interested in water chemistry, or public education, or removing invasive plants, or helping to manage a BC Society. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary.
Streamkeeper training is available through the Pacific Streamkeepers Federation. We can arrange for a training session right here at Byrne Creek!
