Mergansers, Heron Near Capilano Dam
We did some rambling on trails near the Capilano Dam on the north shore today. Fun to see a Great Blue Heron and several Common Mergansers in the “surf.”

Red-Tailed Hawk at Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park
Spotted this beauty just west of Byrne Road in Fraser Foreshore Park in SE #Burnaby today.
Coho, Chum Spawning on Byrne Creek in Burnaby
I didn’t have time for a complete spawner patrol on Byrne Creek in Burnaby, but I took a peek between the bridges and in the sediment pond coming home from some errands.
Two dead coho between the bridges, I reached and processed one of them, male, not spawned, 43cm. The other one was not reachable without rubber boots.
Also saw 4 live chum below Southridge, but I did not have time to check the ravine.
NOTE: I like to add that streamkeepers have training from PSKF, and permission from DFO and the City of Burnaby to monitor spawning salmon, and process them for species, sex, size, and spawning status after they die.
It is illegal to interfere with spawning salmon, or remove them from the creek. Please stay out of the creek and enjoy this spectacle of nature from a reasonable distance.
If you see fish cut in half, that indicates that streamkeepers assessed them, and cut them to ensure we do not double-count carcasses.

We were excited to see dozens of chum returning to spawn in Scott Creek in Coquitlam.

I love watching the colors change over the days as volunteers monitor salmon spawning in Byrne Creek in Burnaby. What a delight!
Chum Salmon Spawning in Byrne Creek
Volunteer streamkeepers have observed as many as 10 salmon now on Byrne Creek in Burnaby. It’s wonderful to see them coming back to spawn!
Last Light at Porteau Cove, BC
Last light today at Porteau Cove on the Sea to Sky north of Vancouver. This was just before 6pm.

Salmon, Birds Galore at Burnaby Lake
Whew, what an amazing day!
I did our monthly recycling run to the Still Creek Environment Centre in Burnaby, and on the way home I parked near the Cariboo Dam and walked to Piper Spit and back on Burnaby Lake.
Unfortunately it was overcast, but there were still plenty of chum salmon to be seen around the fish ladder at the Cariboo Dam.

Crows were harassing a hawk. I thought they had driven it off, but as I left the spit I took one more look at the tree I thought it had hidden in, and it was still there.
